Jackson originally studied chemistry at the University of Manchester, receiving the B.Sc in 1934 and the PhD in 1938. From 1937-42 he was a demonstrator in physiology at the University. In 1945 he received his medical degree from Manchester, and later specialized in pharmacology. He was head of the Unit for Reproductive Pharmacology and reader in reproductive pharmacology at the University of Manchester.
