Marshall was born in Bolton in 1878 and was educated at Bolton Grammar School and the University of Manchester. He held house appointments at MRI and St Mary's Hospital Manchester before being appointed to the Victoria Hospital for Children, Chelsea. Marshall settled in general practice in Bolton, Lancashire, in 1908. Marshall was particularly interested in phthisis, and when the Wilkinson Sanatorium was opened he was appointed honorary medical officer, a position he held until 1930. Serving in the RAMC, Marshall saw extensive service in France during the war, and won the DSO. He was president of the Bolton Medical Society. Marshall was forced to retire in 1929 due to ill health, he died on 24 January 1931.
