Martin, the son of an orthopaedic surgeon, was born in January 1920. He gained his medical qualifications from the University of Liverpool in 1942 and held various obstetrics and gynaecological appointments in Liverpool from 1947 until 1959. Martin was consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist to South Manchester Hospitals from 1959 to 1965, and from 1965 was also consultant at Wythenshawe. Martin gained his FRCS (Edinburgh) in 1957 and FRCOG in 1965. He was a member of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society.
