McKelvie was house surgeon at MRI and Central London Throat and Ear Hospital before settling in general practice in Bolton. He was clinical assistant to the aural departments at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, MRI and Ancoats Hospital Manchester. McKelvie was in consulting practice from 1927, he was aural surgeon to St John's Ear Hospital, Booth Hall and Monsall Hospitals, Manchester, Hope and Ladywell Hospitals, Salford, and Townley's Hospital, Bolton. He was also assistant surgical officer in the aural department at MRI. McKelvie retired in 1969 to the Isle of Man. He died on 3 September 1989.
