Parish received the MB ChB with distinction from the University of Manchester in 1940. He was a former consultant surgeon for Manchester RHB. He was later a consultant thoracic surgeon from Cambridge AHA and the East Anglian RHB. Parish was also director of postgraduate education for East Anglian RHB. Parish was dean of postgraduate medicine at Cambridge University and an associate lecturer in thoracic surgery.
