Mills gained her medical education at the University of Manchester. She held resident appointments in Manchester at Withington Hospital and Christie Hospital, and was chief assistant to MRI. Mills later became consultant gynaecologist to Manchester Northern Hospital, Crumpsall Hospital and Stretford Memorial Hospital. She was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society (president in 1972). Mills married T.S. Heslop, but retained her maiden name in professional circles. Mills retired in the 1970s.
