Holmes was born on 17 April 1889. He lived for a time in Australia but returned to England and undertook his medical education in Manchester, winning many prizes. After qualifying, held house positions in Manchester and London before going to Serbia with the British Red Cross Society and later serving in the RAMC in India and Mesopotamia. After the war, Holmes came to Manchester and was appointed resident medical officer at MRI. He then held the appointments of honorary physician to Ancoats Hospital and lecturer in applied anatomy and in medicine before being appointed honorary physician at MRI in 1921. He held his position of physician until retirement in 1954 and was also visiting physician to Withington Infirmary. In 1949 Holmes was elected president of Manchester Medical Society, he was also a member of the Manchester Pathological Society. Holmes was a general physician with a particular interest in diseases of the chest. In his last decade, Holmes acted as warden of Lister House, the hostel for medical students. He died of a heart attack shortly after retiring, on 3 July 1954.
