Lapage was born in Nantwich on 16 May 1879, the son of Dr Charles Clement Lapage, practicing in Nantwich. He received his medical education at Owens College Manchester where he was awarded the Agnew Scholarship for Diseases of Children in 1901, an honour which illustrates his early interest in childhood diseases. Lapage was house surgeon at MRI, and later resident medical officer at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and St Mary's Hospitals Manchester. In 1912, Lapage succeeded Henry Ashby as honorary physician to the Children's Hospital and was later on the honorary staff of St Mary's Hospital. In 1913, Lapage was appointed in diseases of children at the University of Manchester, he was later made reader. He was particularly interested in the treatment of children with mental incapacity, and his MD was on feeble-minded children. At Royal Manchester Children's Hospital he was involved in the clinic for the treatment of children with mental and speech defects by non-medical teachers with special qualifications. Lapage a fellow of the British Paediatric Association, president of MMS in 1933, and was also president of the section of diseases of children of the Royal Society of Medicine. He was a keen mountaineer, at the age of sixty-five he climbed all peaks in England over 2,500 feet. Lapage died in Didsbury on 23 September 1947. A paediatric prize at the University of Manchester was founded in Lapage's memory by his widow in 1948.
