Leyberg was born in Poland in 1913, the son of a dermatologist. He qualified in Warsaw in 1936, and then studied for his MD at the Polish School of Medicine in Edinburgh. Leyberg was lecturer in psychiatry at the Polish School until 1946. He came to Bolton in 1951 as consultant psychiatrist.
