Howat studied medicine at the University of St Andrews (MB ChB 1933) and received the MD from the same university in 1960. Howat spent nearly all of his professional career at MRI; he was a resident medical officer from 1938-40 and returned to MRI as a physician in 1948. He was a lecturer in medicine at the University of Manchester from 1946-1969 and chairman of the Faculty of Medicine from 1968-92. From 1972-6 Howat was professor of gastroenterology at the University of Manchester. Howat was a specialist in the study of pancreatitis and was first president of the European pancreatic Club, and played a major role in the development of a gastroenterological service in the Manchester area. He was president of Manchester Medical Society in 1975-6, and was elected 'Manchester Man of the Year' in 1973 by the Manchester Junior Chamber of Commerce.
