Pomfret studied medicine at Owens College and St Bartholomew's, London. He was awarded the MB ChB in 1888 and the MD with gold medal in 1889. He was a surgical registrar at MRI. Pomfret was a member of the Manchester Medical Society and PSM. He was a former Berkeley Fellow at Owens College, Manchester.
