Logan received his medical education at Queen's University Belfast. He held junior appointments in Southampton and Salford before serving in the Royal Navy as surgeon lieutenant commander. In 1947 Logan won a research fellowship with the MRC to study adolescent workers. He became lecturer in industrial medicine, and later reader, at the University of Manchester, and in 1950 organized the University health service. In 1967, Logan was appointed chair of organization of medical care at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
