Hickling (née Geiler) graduate in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1910. She took the MD and DPH from the same University in 1912. She was a former registrar and anaesthetist at Manchester Babies Hospital (Duchess of York), and an anaesthetist at Manchester Children's Hospital. She was later an assistant child welfare medical officer for Newcastle Corporation
