McIlraith gained his medical education at Manchester and Dublin. He held resident appointments at MRI, St Mary's Hospital Manchester and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, and served in the RAMC. McIlraith later settled in practice in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, where he was honorary medical officer to the Cottage Hospital and to Sandlebridge Schools.
