Melland, the son of Frederick Melland, was born in Manchester on 20 October 1872. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School, Owens College Manchester, London University, Vienna and Graz. Melland held resident appointments at MRI, Manchester Children's Hospital, and the City of London Hospital for Diseases of the Chest. In 1901, after a year as an assistant in the Laboratory of Clinical Pathology in Vienna, Melland was appointed director of the clinical laboratory at MRI, a position he held until 1905. He was physician to Ancoats Hospital Manchester from 1901 to 1914 and was also honorary physician to the Manchester Northern Children's Hospital, consulting physician to Chorlton-on-Medlock Dispensary and visiting physician to Prestwich Union Infirmary. He served in the RAMC during the first war and on his return was appointed physician to MRI, a position he held until retirement in 1932. Melland was also honorary physician of the National Association for the Care of the Feebleminded. He was a member of MMS and Manchester Pathological Society. Melland died on 8 January 1953 aged 80.
