Pierce studied medicine at Manchester Royal School of Medicine, qualifying in 1867 with the LSA and MRCS. An aural surgeon, he was a consultant at the Manchester Ear Hospital, a consulting physician at Hulme Dispensary. He was member of the Manchester Medical Society and a vice-president of MMES.
