Martland was born in Standish, near Wigan, on 24 October 1854. He was educated at Wigan Grammar School and studied medicine at Owens College Manchester, gaining the Dumville Surgical Prize. Martland went to Oldham in 1877 as assistant to Dr Platt and from 1887 was on the staff of the Oldham Royal Infirmary. He was assistant surgeon, then acting surgeon, and on retirement in 1909 was made consulting surgeon. Martland was vice-president of the Lancashire and Cheshire Branch of the BMA. He was involved in the panel committees of the Insurance Act and was also a JP. Martland retired from practice in 1924. He died on 27 January 1939 in his 85th year.
