Model was born in Freiberg, the son of a medical practitioner. He qualified MD from Heidelberg in 1932 and was house physician in Freiberg. He came to England in 1935 and held hospital appointments in Leeds. From 1950 to 1957 Model was psychiatrist to the Manchester Child Guidance Clinic, and was medical director of the Salford Child Guidance Clinic from 1951. Model was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and the Association for Child Psychology and Psychiatry.
