Leahy gained his medical education at the University of Manchester, qualifying in 1977. He was tutor in medicine at the University from 1981 to 1984, and then senior registrar at Withington Hospital Manchester and MRI before being appointed consultant physician to Trafford Health Authority in 1990. From 1992 Leahy was also honorary lecturer in medicine at the University. Leahy was a member of the British Thoracic Society and the Medical Research Society.
