Maltby studied medicine at the University of Leeds and was postgraduate fellow in orthopaedic research at the Mayo Clinic, USA. Matlby was senior registrar in orthopaedics at MRI and lecturer in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Manchester before being appointed consultant in orthopaedic surgery at MRI.
