Heath was the son of Ashton Heath. He studied at Manchester Royal School of Medicine and qualified in 1852, and later studied at Guy's Hospital and in Paris. He was appointed a dispensary surgeon at MRI in 1855, becoming a full surgeon in 1866, a post he held until 1889.
