Leigh studied medicine at Manchester and held appointments at Altrincham General Hospital, Ashton-under-Lyne Infirmary, Manchester Ear Hospital and Birmingham and the Midlands Eye Hospital. Leigh layer became ophthalmic surgeon at Sunderland Eye Infirmary.
