Lewis trained at St Thomas's Hospital and was house physician there. He was house surgeon and senior registrar at St Mary's Hospital London and was lecturer in medicine at the Central Middlesex Hospital London. Lewis later came to Stockport where he was consultant physician in cardiology at Stepping Hill Hospital and at Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle.
