Longbottom studied medicine at the University of Manchester. He served as a doctor in the RAMC during the second world war, during which he was taken prisoner by the Japanese at Singapore and later became prison camp medical officer. Longbottom returned to Manchester where he gained a diploma in public health. He was assistant county medical officer for Lancashire before being appointed medical officer of health for Knutsford and Altrincham, a position he held until his death. Longbottom died on 14 September 1961, aged 48.
