Mahindrakar was born in Dharwar, India, on 6 September 1932. He received his medical education at the University of Bombay. In 1962, Mahindrakar was appointed ENT registrar to Woolwich Group of Hospitals, and from 1965 to 1967 was senior ENT registrar at MRI. He was lecturer in ENT at the University of Manchester in 1967 before being appointed senior consultant ENT surgeon to Bolton Group of Hospitals, a position he held from 1968 until the 1990s. Mahindrakar was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, a member of the North of England Otolaryngology Society and a member of MMS.
