Leck received his medical education at Birmingham University; he held junior positions at Walsall General Hospital and was captain in the RAMC before being appointed research fellow in social medicine at Birmingham University in 1957, being promoted to lecturer in 1959. Leck became senior lecturer in community medicine at University College London before coming to Manchester in 1971 as reader in community medicine. Leck was also honorary medical director of the Regional Cancer Epidemiology Unit and honorary consultant in social medicine at the University Hospital of South Manchester. In 1979 Leck became professor of epidemiology at the University of Manchester and was made emeritus on his retirement. Leck was a member of the Society for Social Medicine, of which he was honorary secretary.
