Aubrey Jelly studied medicine at Owens College and Edinburgh University. He was for an assistant surgeon at British Ophthalmic Hospital, Jerusalem, and an honorary ophthalmic surgeon at Bury Infirmary and St John's Hospital for Diseases of the Eye and Ear, Manchester. He was later oculist to Lancashire County Council.
