Holt, known as Muriel, studied medicine at the University of Manchester. She was house surgeon at Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital and assistant MOH for Rochdale before being appointed medical officer for Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Holt was later assistant MOH for Keighley, Yorkshire.
