Holmes was a student at Owens College and was awarded the Dauntesey Medical Scholarship. After qualifying, she was senior orthopaedic house surgeon at Ancoats Hospital and later held appointments at the Shropshire Orthopaedic Hospital and the Morland Clinics in Alton. She spent a year in Stockholm and Canada studying the treatment of tuberculosis. Holmes was then appointed AMO at the Scotton Banks Sanatorium, Knaresborough, before entering general practice. Holmes was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and of the Society of Medical Officers of Health. She suffered ill health through much of her life and died, aged forty one, on 4 September 1940.
