Porter was the son of Sir Alexander Porter, a former lord mayor of Manchester. He graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1906, and went on to take the MD in 1909. He held various house and resident posts at Manchester hospitals, before going into partnership with his brother Alexander Porter in Dovercourt, Essex.
