Patterson studied medicine at Queen's University, Belfast and did postgraduate work in Vienna. He was a paediatric superintendent at Booth Hall Hospital and at Crumpsall Hospital, Manchester. He was also a clinical lecturer in paediatrics at the University of Manchester.
