Lord trained at the University of Manchester and was house physician at MRI. He was resident medical officer at Royal National Hospital Ventnor before being appointed senior resident medical officer at Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood. Lord was assistant tuberculosis officer for the City of Manchester before pursuing a career in public health in Northamptonshire.
