Heath was educated at the Dental School of University College London. He qualified BDS in 1966 and later took a Ph.D from the University of Birmingham in 1972. He lectured in dental prosthetics at the University of Birmingham from 1971-1984. and was later senior lecturer in prosthetic dentistry and honorary consultant in restorative dentistry at the University Dental School, Manchester.
