Jessup was born in Bury on 29 October 1926 and graduated from the University of Manchester in 1950. He was in general practice in Wythenshawe, Manchester. He was a fellow of the Manchester Medical Society. Jessup was a fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners from 1974, and from 1981 to 1983 was Provost. Jessup's wife, Margaret Dorothy Jessup, née Walsh, b. 1925 (MB ChB 1949, MRCGP 1972), was in general practice in Manchester from 1966 to 1983 (see MMC/2/WalshM).
