Holt studied at Owens College and Middlesex Hospital. After qualifying he held house positions at St Mary's Hospital Manchester and Stanley Hospital Liverpool. He was then appointed assistant to the MOH for Stockport and was medical officer for the Barnes Home Industrial Schools in Heaton Mersey. Holt was a fellow of the Royal Institute of Public Health and was president of Stockport Medical Society. He was also well known in Lancashire as a golfer. Holt retired to Bournemouth around 1932 and died there on 31 January 1937 aged sixty.
