Hollins was educated at Manchester Grammar School before being apprenticed with his brother, Thomas Hollins, to W R Whatton. He qualified in 1838 but shortly afterwards left the medical profession to join his uncle as a potter in Stoke. By 1874 Hollins was the sole proprietor of Minton Hollins and Co.
