James Partington was the son of a successful dyer, based in Chorlton under Medlock, Manchester. He was a medical apprentice to Peter Holland, a surgeon in Knutsford, and then went on to study at Guy's Hospital, London. Partington was admitted to the LSA and MRCS in 1816; he then returned to practise in Manchester. He taught midwifery at Manchester Royal School of Medicine from 1835-1838. He played an important role in the establishment of the Chorlton on Medlock Dispensary.
