Lomas studied medicine at Owens College Manchester and was house surgeon at MRI and Manchester Clinical Hospital before being appointed medical officer and public vaccinator for Rochdale Union. Lomas was a member of Manchester Medical and Pathological Societies and of the North of England Obstetrical Society.
