Hall is believed to have studied medicine under Dr Thomas Clayton in Manchester, ending his apprenticeship around 1820. He lived and practised in central Manchester, before moving to a rural retreat in Moss Side when he was elderly. He was a Jacobite sympathiser and may have met with Prince Charles Edward when the latter entered Manchester in 1745. He was surgeon extraordinary to MRI 1752-1793. Hall had two sons, Richard and Edward, who were surgeons at the MRI. Hall was a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society.
