Janus graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1934, and took the MD degree in 1940. He was a consultant surgeon at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Janus was a former president of the North of England Ophthalmic Society, and a member of the Oxford Ophthalmic Congress.
