Howitt qualified from the University of Manchester in 1950 and was a consultant cardiologist at MRI from 1963-1991. He carried out important research on the effects of beta blockers in the 1960s. He was a lecturer in cardiology at the University of Manchester and a honorary secretary of the Manchester Medical Society.
