Malcolm Jayson studied medicine at the Middlesex Hospital, and received the MB MS of the University of London. In 1969 he received the MD from the University of Bristol. He was made a FRCP in 1976. From 1967-1977 he was lecturer and senior lecturer in rheumatology at the University of Bristol. From 1977-1999 he was professor of rheumatology at director of the rheumatism laboratories at the University of Manchester, and consultant rheumatologist at Hope Hospital Salford, MRI, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and the Devonshire Royal Hospital, Buxton. Since 1993 he has been director of the Manchester and Salford Back Pain Centre. Professor Jayson has published extensively on the subject of rheumatology, including research into the physiology of joints, collagen changes in connective tissue disorder and particularly the study of back pain.
