McMurray held registrar positions at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton, Birmingham Accident Hospital and University College Hospital London, specialising in pathology. He was later appointed consultant in chemical pathology to Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester. McMurray was a member of the Association of Clinical Biochemists.
