Mitchell qualified in medicine from the University of Aberdeen in 1899. He held appointments in Manchester as anaesthetist at St Mary's Hospital and the Christie Cancer Pavilion, and lectured in vaccination at the University of Manchester. He was later a medical officer in the Grantham area of Lincolnshire.
