Moritz was born in Berlin and educated in Germany. He received a doctorate from the University of Würzburg before studying medicine at University College London. He was awarded the LRCP in 1878. He worked as a resident medical officer at the MRI and undertook pathological research with Julius Dreschfeld. He was later medical officer at the Manchester Hospital for Consumption, where he remained until retiring in 1923. Moritz played a major role in the expansion of the hospital, including the development of the Delamere Sanatorium. He was a lecturer in diseases of the throat and nose at the University of Manchester, and wrote several papers on these subjects. His son Manfred Moritz later changed his name to Morris (see below).
