Rodney Harris was a graduate of Liverpool University. He has held various clinical appointments in Liverpool hospitals and also undertook research in South West Africa. In 1968, he was appointed lecturer in medical genetics at the University of Manchester and was a consultant physician at MRI. In 1980 he was elected to the new chair of medical genetics at the University. He later became Director of Research and Development of Central Manchester Healthcare Trust.
