Martin received his medical education at Anderson's College Glasgow and the University of Aberdeen. He was senior house surgeon and medical superintendent to Ancoats Hospital Manchester and physician to Warrington Infirmary. He later settled in practice in Ardwick, Manchester. He may have married the daughter of W[illiam] Massey.
