Nightingale was born in 1952 and gained his medical education at Guy's Hospital where he qualified in 1975. He gained his FFA RCS in 1980 and held anaesthetic appointments in Newcastle and Manchester before being appointed consultant in intensive care and anaesthetics to Withington Hospital.
