Levy, the son of a general practitioner, was born in Manchester on 1 December 1914 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester, gaining his medical qualifications in 1938. He served in the RAMC and studied psychiatry, but returned to Manchester when his father became ill to take over his practice. Levy died on 4 October 1991.
