Marsden, the third son of Richard Walter Marsden (see below), was resident pathologist to the Children's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He was pathologist to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital before being appointed consultant pathologist to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Booth Hall Children's Hospital, Monsall Hospital and Christie Hospital. He was also honorary lecturer at the University of Manchester. Marsden had retired by 1993 and was honorary professor of paediatric pathology at the University. He was an honorary fellow of MMS and an honorary member of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology. Marsden was married to Pamela Jill Marsden (née Coope), also a paediatrician (see below).
